Cleanouts
Attic Cleanout Services
An attic is storage with a trapdoor. Everything up there went up one box at a time over twenty years, usually by someone younger, and now all of it has to come back down a folding ladder that was never designed for a dresser. Junk Rhinos provides attic cleanout services for exactly that problem: our crew does the climbing, the crawling and the careful carrying, then hauls the lot away and donates what is still useful.
You point out what stays, we clear the rest and sweep the boards. You do not have to go up there at all, which in August is a gift in itself.

- Insured, uniformed crews
- Free on-site estimate
- No deposit, no hidden fees
- Same or next-day in most areas
- We donate & recycle first
Why an attic cleanout is harder than it looks
A basement has stairs. A garage has a door. An attic usually has a hatch about two feet square and a pull-down ladder rated for one person and not much else. Every item comes out by hand, one at a time, passed down from the person in the attic to the person on the ladder to the person on the floor. That is why a two-person crew matters here, and why an attic full of boxes takes longer than the same boxes in a garage.
Then there is the floor, or the lack of one. Many attics are partly boarded, with open joists and the top of your ceiling drywall between them. One foot in the wrong place and the cleanout becomes a ceiling repair. Our crew works from the boards and joists, never the bays between them, and keeps loads small enough to carry with good footing.
And attics are hot. On a summer afternoon an unventilated attic can be far hotter than the outdoors. In warm months we schedule attic jobs in the morning whenever we can, because a crew that is not cooking works more carefully, and careful is the whole point.
What our attic cleanout includes
Walk-through and estimate
The crew looks at the hatch, the ladder, how much of the attic is boarded and how much is up there, then confirms a firm, all-in price before anything moves.
Protect the rooms below
Drop cloths go down under the hatch and along the route to the door, so dust, insulation fibers and decades of grit do not end up on your hallway carpet.
Sort and stage
You tell us what stays. One crew member works in the attic, moving items toward the hatch and breaking down anything that was assembled up there, like shelving or a bed frame that has no other way out.
Hand down and carry out
Items come down the ladder hand to hand and go straight to the truck. Nothing gets dropped through the opening, no matter how tempting that is with a box of old paperbacks.
Sweep and check
We sweep the boarded areas, clear the landing below, and walk you through the empty space so you can see it is done.
Attic cleanout situations we handle
Most attics fill slowly and empty all at once. These are the reasons people finally call.
Getting the house ready to sell
Buyers and inspectors look in the attic, and a packed one hides the roof deck, the vents and the wiring an inspector needs to see. Clearing it before listing makes the inspection simpler and the photos honest. If the attic is part of a whole-house job, it rides with a house cleanout on the same visit.
Clearing a parent's home
An estate cleanout almost always ends in the attic, and it is the part families dread most because nobody remembers what is up there. We bring down anything that looks personal, like photo albums, letters, documents or a box marked with someone's name, and set it aside for the family instead of deciding for you.
The holiday decor and the cribs
Four artificial trees, three generations of ornaments, a crib, a high chair, a stroller and the boxes the TV came in. This is the classic attic load: light, bulky and slow to bring down. Usable baby gear and decorations are donated where a local charity will take them.
Before an insulation, roofing or HVAC job
Contractors need a clear attic to work, and many will not move your belongings. We empty it first so the insulation crew, roofer or HVAC tech can start on the scheduled day. If they leave bagged fiberglass behind afterward, that can be hauled as construction debris.
Pests got in
Mice, squirrels and raccoons like attics as much as boxes do. We can remove the damaged boxes, nests in soft goods and chewed belongings, with gloves and masks. What we do not do is pest control, droppings cleanup or sanitizing; that is remediation work for a pest or restoration company. Call them for the animals and the cleanup, and us for the stuff.
A roof leak ruined everything
Waterlogged boxes, mildewed clothing and furniture that sat under a drip for a season. Once the leak is fixed and your insurer has documented the damage, we clear the attic so drying and repairs can start.
It came with the house
New owners open the hatch and find the previous family's luggage, paint-stained drop cloths and a rowing machine. Nobody knows how the rowing machine got up there. It still comes down.
Straight talk
Before we arrive
Make the hatch reachable
Clear the closet, hallway or garage floor under the attic access, and move anything fragile off nearby walls. If the ladder sticks or a spring is broken, let us know when you book.
Tell us about the attic
Is it a walk-up attic with stairs, a pull-down ladder or a ceiling scuttle hole? Is it boarded, partly boarded or open joists? Is there a light up there? Photos from the hatch help the estimate more than anything.
Flag anything you want to keep
If there are specific boxes or items staying, point them out at the walk-through or mark them. Everything else is fair game for the truck.
Mention pests or water damage
If you have seen droppings, nests or signs of a leak, say so. It does not change whether we can do the job, but it changes what the crew wears and brings.
Leave the insulation to the insulation pros
We clear belongings, not insulation. Removing blown-in or old insulation from between the joists is a separate trade with its own equipment, and some older insulation, especially vermiculite, may contain asbestos. We will not disturb it, and nobody without an abatement license should. If you need the insulation replaced, call an insulation contractor first or after us, not instead of us.
What we take and what we do not
We take:
- Boxes, bins and bags of stored household goods
- Old furniture, bed frames, mirrors and lamps
- Holiday decorations and artificial trees
- Baby gear, toys and outgrown sports equipment
- Luggage, clothing and old linens
- Old electronics, TVs and computers, sent to e-waste recycling
- Loose shelving and storage racks
- Water-damaged or chewed belongings
- Fiberglass insulation that has already been removed and bagged
What we do not take or do: we do not remove insulation from the joists, whether blown-in or rolled, and we do not touch vermiculite or any material that may contain asbestos. We do not do pest, droppings or mold remediation, and we leave anything built into the structure, such as flooring, ductwork or wiring. Paint, solvents, chemicals, fuels and pesticides cannot go on the truck either; take these to your household hazardous waste program.
What does an attic cleanout cost?
Attic cleanouts are priced by volume, the same as every job we do: the share of the truck your belongings fill. A few boxes and the holiday decor usually take about an eighth of the truck, and a partly full attic with a couple of small furniture pieces about a quarter. A half-full attic over an average home is around half a truck, and a packed one, boxes floor to rafters, about three-quarters. A large walk-up attic fills the truck. A fully packed attic is closer to a garage cleanout in volume and slower in labor, because everything comes down by hand.
A tight scuttle hatch or a long crawl to the far end can add labor, and the crew accounts for that when it confirms your firm price on-site, free, before anything comes down. Many attic jobs grow into a full truck because they are paired with a basement, garage or full house cleanout, and combining them on one visit usually costs less than separate trips. Our pricing page explains how the truck-space tiers work.
- Priced by the truck space your load fills
- Firm, all-in price confirmed free on-site
- No deposit, and nothing owed until it is done
- Labor, hauling and disposal fees all included
How long does it take?
A small attic clears in an hour or two. A packed attic over a full house usually takes half a day, sometimes most of one, because the ladder sets the pace. Walk-up attics with a real staircase go faster. The crew gives you a realistic time at the walk-through, and in summer we aim to finish before the attic hits its afternoon peak.
What happens to the materials
Attics hold more donatable goods than people expect: holiday decorations, kids' gear, small furniture, luggage and boxed housewares often go to local charities. Metal shelving and frames are recycled. Old electronics go to e-waste recycling rather than a landfill. Water-damaged, chewed or mildewed items go to the appropriate disposal stream, and personal papers and photographs are set aside for you, not thrown out.
Frequently asked questions
How much does an attic cleanout cost?
It depends on how much is up there and how hard it is to get down. The price follows the share of the truck your belongings fill, most attics landing between an eighth and a full truck, plus any extra labor for a tight hatch or a long crawl. The crew confirms a firm, all-in price free on-site before starting.
Do you remove attic insulation?
No. Removing blown-in or rolled insulation is a separate trade, and older insulation like vermiculite may contain asbestos. If a contractor has already removed and bagged fiberglass insulation, we can haul the bags.
Can you clean out an attic with only a pull-down ladder?
Yes, that is most attics. Items are handed down the ladder by a two-person crew, and anything too big for the hatch is taken apart first if it was assembled up there.
Will you damage my ceiling?
The crew works from boards and joists, never between them, and puts floor protection down under the hatch. If your attic has no boarding at all, tell us at booking so we can plan safe footing.
Do I need to go up into the attic?
No. Point out anything you want kept, from the ladder or with photos, and the crew does the rest.
There are mouse droppings in my attic. Can you still clear it?
Yes, we can remove the belongings with protective gear. Cleaning droppings, sanitizing and pest control are remediation jobs for a pest or restoration company, and we do not do them.
What if you find family photos or documents?
We set them aside for you. Anything that looks personal comes down and stays with the family to decide.
Can you do an attic cleanout in the summer?
Yes. We book attic jobs in the morning whenever possible in hot weather, before the space heats up.
Is there an attic clean out service near me?
Junk Rhinos has local crews in most areas, with same-day or next-day scheduling in many of them. Check our locations page or request an estimate to confirm.
Can you clear the attic, garage and basement on the same visit?
Yes, and it usually costs less than booking them separately, since pricing follows total volume.
How long does an attic cleanout take?
A light attic takes an hour or two. A packed one can take half a day or more, mostly because everything comes down a ladder by hand.
