Why you cannot just put a mattress on the curb
Mattresses are bulky, they trap moisture, and they jam compactor trucks, which is why so many municipal programs restrict them. Depending on your city, curbside mattress disposal may require a scheduled bulk pickup, a mattress bag, a fee sticker, or it may be banned outright, and illegal dumping fines are steep almost everywhere. What actually happens to old mattresses
An honest answer: it depends on what facilities exist near you. Where mattress recycling is available, we use it, and the steel springs, foam, and wood frames get separated and recovered. Where no facility exists, disposal follows local regulations. We will not promise you a recycling certificate for every mattress in every ZIP code, because nobody can honestly promise that. What we can promise is that recycling is our first choice every time it exists.

What is the best way to get rid of an old mattress?
If it is clean and in good shape, donation is worth trying first, though many charities decline used mattresses for hygiene rules. For everything else, a pickup service is the fastest legal route: no city bulk-pickup queue, no bagging requirements, no truck rental.
Do I need to wrap or bag the mattress?
