Cleanouts

House Cleanout Services

A house cleanout is what you call for when the job is the whole house, not one closet. The move is booked and the new place is half the size. The realtor walked through and said the word "declutter" with a straight face. The renovation starts in two weeks and every room is still full. Junk Rhinos clears whole homes for the people who live in them: you decide what stays, our crew carries out everything else, and the house is left swept and empty enough to list, renovate or hand over.

Most whole homes fill between one and four of our trucks. That is a big job, and we treat it like one: a free on-site walk-through, a firm all-in price before anything is lifted, and a crew sized to finish in a day or two rather than a month of weekend dump runs.

What a whole house cleanout actually involves

A whole house clean out is several jobs stacked on top of each other: the living space, the kitchen, which holds more objects per square foot than any other room, and the storage zones every house quietly fills, from the attic hatch to the basement stairs with a turn at the bottom.

Doing it yourself means a rented truck, friends who suddenly have plans, and six trips to a transfer station that charges by weight and closes at 3:30. Our version is one crew, one or more trucks, and one price that includes labor, loading, hauling and disposal. You make decisions. We do the carrying.

What our house cleanout service includes

  1. Walk-through and firm price

We walk the house with you, room by room, including the garage, basement and attic. You tell us what stays, and we confirm a firm, all-in price for what goes. Free, and no obligation.

  2. Keep pile agreed

Anything staying is pointed out, labeled or moved to one room before we start. If the crew finds papers, photos or anything that looks personal in a drawer, it gets set aside for you rather than tossed.

  3. Room-by-room clearing

The crew works through the house systematically, usually top floor down, so carried items are not walking past a room that is still full. Floors, doorframes and stair rails are protected on the way out.

  4. Donate, recycle, then dispose

Usable furniture and household goods go to local charities. Metal, appliances and electronics go to recyclers. What is left goes to disposal, which is a smaller pile than most people expect.

  5. Sweep and hand back

Every cleared room gets swept. You walk the house again with the crew before we leave, and you pay when you are satisfied it is done.

House cleanouts we handle most

The reasons people clear an entire house tend to repeat.

Downsizing to a smaller home

The new condo has two bedrooms and the house had four, plus a basement that absorbed thirty years of "we might need it." Once you have chosen what is moving with you, we clear the rest. Furniture that does not fit the new floor plan is exactly what local charities want.

Getting the house ready to list

Buyers cannot picture their own furniture in a room full of yours. We can clear the garage, basement and spare rooms ahead of staging, then come back for the rest after you move. Tell us the listing date and the closing date, and we schedule around both.

Moving out of state on a deadline

It rarely makes sense to pay a mover to ship a $60 bookcase 1,200 miles. Many customers move the essentials and have us clear everything else the day after the movers leave. If you have already flown out, we can work with a neighbor, friend or your agent on access and send photos as the house empties.

Clearing out before a renovation

A kitchen remodel or a full gut needs empty rooms, and contractors do not move furniture for free. We clear the rooms in the work zone, or the whole house, before demolition starts. When the project wraps, the leftover drywall, cabinets and lumber are a job for our renovation debris removal crews.

Decades of stuff, finally addressed

No move, no sale, no deadline, just a house that has been filling up for twenty years. This is house junk removal at its most satisfying: we clear the attic, the basement, the garage and the guest room nobody has slept in since 2011, and you keep living in a house that suddenly has space in it.

An inherited house the family has finished with

If you inherited a house and the family has already taken what it wants, what remains is a straightforward whole house junk removal job, and you are in the right place. If the family is still sorting, or you are acting as executor and need help with keepsakes, documents and coordination with an attorney, our estate cleanout service is built for that. Rental turnovers, evictions and bank-owned properties belong with our property cleanout services.

Straight talk

Before we arrive: what you need to do

Decide what stays

Move keepers into one room, or mark them with painter's tape. Anything unmarked in a cleared room is assumed to be leaving.

Pull out paperwork and valuables

Go through desks, filing cabinets and the box of "important things" before the crew starts. Passports, deeds, tax records, jewelry and family photos belong in your car, not in a drawer of a dresser headed for donation.

Tell us about heavy and awkward items

Pianos, safes, hot tubs, sheds, pool tables and basement chest freezers are usually fine, but they are better priced at the walk-through than discovered on the stairs.

Set the hazardous shelf aside

Paint, solvents, pool chemicals, pesticides and fuel cans cannot go on our truck. Gather them in one spot so the crew can clear around them, and take them to your county's household hazardous waste program.

What we take and what we do not

We take almost everything a house can hold:

  • Furniture from every room, including sleeper sofas, sectionals and bed frames
  • Mattresses and box springs
  • Appliances: refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves and freezers, once disconnected
  • Electronics, TVs and old computers
  • Kitchen contents, dishes, small appliances and pantry clutter
  • Clothing, linens, books and boxes of every vintage
  • Garage, attic and basement contents, shelving and workbenches included
  • Exercise equipment, bikes, toys, rugs and sporting goods
  • Outdoor furniture, grills with the propane tank removed, and yard clutter

What we do not take: paints, solvents, chemicals, fuels, propane tanks, pesticides, and anything containing asbestos. Gas appliances need to be disconnected by a licensed professional before removal day, and we do not disconnect gas lines or hardwired electrical. That is licensed-trade work, and no honest hauler should be improvising it.

What does a house cleanout cost?

Whole house cleanout cost follows the same rule as every job we do: you pay for the truck space your load fills, not for the size of the house or the hours on the clock. A few rooms left after a move or a family sort usually fill half to three-quarters of a truck. A fully furnished one-bedroom house is about one full truckload, a furnished two or three-bedroom house one to two, a three or four-bedroom home with a full garage two to three, and a large home with a packed basement and attic three or four, sometimes more. The keep pile reduces the price by definition, so every decision you make before we arrive shows up in the number.

Heavy materials and extra labor can move the figure: a piano on a second floor, a basement full of old tile, a long carry from a house with no driveway. The crew confirms a firm, all-in price at the free walk-through, before anything is lifted, and our pricing page explains how the truck-space tiers work.

  • Priced by the truck space your load fills
  • Firm, all-in price confirmed free on-site
  • No deposit, and nothing owed until it is done
  • Labor, hauling and disposal fees all included

How long does a house cleanout take?

A partly emptied house can clear in a few hours. A furnished three or four-bedroom home usually takes a full day, and a large house with a packed basement, attic and garage can run into a second. We size the crew and trucks to the job. If you need the house empty by a closing or a lease start, tell us the date first and we plan backwards from it.

What happens to everything we haul

A whole house holds more useful goods than people expect. Furniture, housewares, linens and clothing in usable condition go to local charities. Refrigerators, washers and other appliances go to metal and appliance recyclers, electronics go to e-waste processing, and cardboard and scrap metal are recycled. Only what is left after that goes to disposal. If a charity issues a donation receipt for items from your house, we pass it on to you.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to clean out a house?

It depends on how much leaves the house. Most whole homes fill one to four truckloads, and the price follows that volume, plus any extra labor for heavy items like a piano or safe, tight stairs or a long carry to the truck. The firm, all-in price is confirmed free on-site before any work begins.

How long does it take to clean out a whole house?

Most homes clear in one day, and large homes with packed storage areas can take two. We give you the timeline at the walk-through.

Do I need to be home during the cleanout?

Not for the whole job. Someone needs to agree the keep pile at the start, which can be you, a family member or your agent, and we can send photos as the work progresses.

Can you clear the house before my closing date?

Yes. Give us the closing date when you request an estimate, and we schedule the cleanout ahead of it. Same-day and next-day slots are available in most areas.

Is a house cleanout the same as an estate cleanout?

The physical work is similar, but an estate cleanout is set up for families and executors clearing a loved one's home, with more time spent on keepsakes and coordination. If you are clearing your own house, this is the right service.

Do you clean the house afterward?

We sweep every room we clear. We are not a cleaning company, so scrubbing, carpet shampooing and deep cleaning are a job for a cleaning service once the house is empty.

What can you not take from a house cleanout?

Hazardous materials: paint, solvents, chemicals, fuels, propane tanks and anything with asbestos. Your local household hazardous waste program handles those.

Is there a local crew near me for whole house junk removal?

We have local crews in most areas of the country. Check our locations page or call, and we will confirm availability for your address.

Do I have to empty the house completely?

No. Scope is yours to set: one floor, or the whole house down to the last coat hanger. The price follows what actually leaves.
